Jalen Brunson becomes fourth NBA player with 4 consecutive 40-point games in the postseason

  • AP

Jalen Brunson has become the fourth player to score 40 or more points in four consecutive postseason games, the first since Michael Jordan in the 1993 NBA Finals. Brunson reached 40 with a big fourth quarter and finished with 43 to rally the Knicks to a 121-117 victory in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Indiana Pacers. The Knicks trailed by nine early in the quarter. Lakers Hall of Famer Jerry West holds the record with six consecutive games of 40 or more points, set during the 1965 postseason. Brunson finished the first-round series against Philadelphia with games of 47, 40 and 41 points.

  • By WARREN MAYES - Associated Press

Brandon Nimmo hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning that sent the New York Mets to a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Sean Manaea pitched six effective innings and Edwin Díaz rebounded from a blown save Sunday as the Mets bounced back from a weekend sweep at Tampa Bay. Iván Herrera had a two-run double for the Cardinals, who have lost five of six. Díaz worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save in six opportunities. Manaea allowed three runs and six hits in his first career start against the Cardinals. He became the first Mets starter to earn a win since Luis Severino beat Pittsburgh 9-1 on April 17.

Bruins' defenseman Brandon Carlo's day: Wife gives birth in morning, he scores goal in evening

  • AP

Have a day, Brandon Carlo. The Boston defenseman wasn’t with his team Monday morning for an excellent reason — his wife Mayson was giving birth to their son, Crew. It’s the couple’s second child. With mother and baby doing well, Carlo flew to South Florida, arriving at Amerant Bank Arena later than the rest of his teammates and scored a second-period goal for the Bruins. Carlo scored with 21 seconds left in the second, getting his second goal of the playoffs and giving Boston a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Michael Massey, Maikel Garcia key a 7th-inning rally for the Royals in a 3-2 win over the Brewers

  • By DAVID SMALE - Associated Press

Michael Massey homered and Maikel Garcia singled in two runs in a three-run seventh inning as the Kansas City Royals rallied past the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2. The start was moved up a half-hour to 6:10 p.m. CDT to beat predicted thunderstorms, which didn’t arrive before the last out. The Royals did next to nothing against Milwaukee starter Bryse Wilson, who allowed one hit and struck out six in six scoreless innings. But they broke through in the seventh against the Brewers’ bullpen. Cole Ragans allowed two runs on two hits in six innings for the Royals, striking out eight. Reliever Nick Anderson got the win.

DeLuca stays hot with homer and 4 RBIs as Rays beat Clevinger and White Sox 8-2

  • By MARK DIDTLER - Associated Press

Jonny DeLuca continued his hot stretch with a homer and four RBIs, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat Mike Clevinger and the Chicago White Sox 8-2 on Monday night for their fourth consecutive win. DeLuca has driven in 10 runs in four games after being sidelined with a broken right hand all season. DeLuca had a two-run single in a three-run second against Clevinger, and hit a two-run drive off Jared Shuster during a three-run fifth that made it 7-2. Clevinger was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte before the game, and allowed four runs, six hits and four walks over two-plus innings.

Justin Steele returns from hamstring injury as Cubs take on Padres

  • By JAY COHEN - AP Baseball Writer

When Justin Steele got hurt on opening day, the big question for the Chicago Cubs centered on the state of their rotation without their ace left-hander. That concern faded away over time. Steele has returned to one of baseball’s best rotations, starting the opener of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres. He allowed three hits, struck out two and walked one in 4 2/3 scoreless innings. It was Steele’s first major league appearance since he strained his left hamstring while making a play on a sacrifice bunt at Texas on March 28. Keegan Thompson was optioned to Triple-A Iowa to make room on the roster.
