Rugged, meandering, and riddled with pine-fringed mountains, vegetable terraces, flower farms, scenic massif views, and untamed fauna, Tuba, Benguet, beckon the wild at heart. This unassuming town lurks in the shadow of its more popular neighbor Baguio City, so, it’s largely untouristy. But it doesn’t mean you have to skip it in your Benguet itinerary. This chilled-out town lavished with both man-made and natural attractions untainted by commercialism remains an undiscovered gem for adventure travelers.

So, if you’re wondering where to go in Benguet, aside from Baguio? Try Tuba, Benguet. But what is Tuba, Benguet known for?

Here’s our handpicked Tuba Benguet tourist spot list from our recent trip. Tuba, Benguet is dubbed as the Gateway to Baguio, the roads leading to Baguio, traverse this town, such as Kennon Road, Ben-Palispis Highway (formerly Marcos Highway), Naguilian Road, and Asin-Nangalisan- San Pascual Road. Thus, getting to Tuba, Benguet is not a problem since it’s pretty accessible.

IMPORTANT: Take note that most of these tourists attractions are quite new to tourists, so kindly inform them in advance that you are visiting. I provided the contact number to each destination, so you can arrange a visit, to ensure that the place is ready to accept tourists.

TUBA, BENGUET TOURIST SPOTS

1.PAN AY-AYAMAN PLAYGROUND (Tuba, Benguet)

If you fancy soothing mountain views, dirt tracks, forest-fringed roads, and pastoral scenery, then Tuba, Benguet is ideal for you. A rising tourist destination in Tuba Benguet that is slowly making its mark is Pan Ay-Ayaman Playground. Bountifully tucked in the jungle-clad mountains of Taloy Norte, this sprawling park, is an outdoor hub for exhilarating activities, such as biking and ATV adventures.

On our recent visit to Pan Ay-Ayaman Playground, we tried the ATV Loop with guide for 30 minutes. Rate is ₱650 ($11.06) per person. If you are an experienced driver, you can try the Advance offroad loop for ₱950 ($16.16) per person. Even the standard ATV ride we experienced is not for the faint-hearted. It’s not as easy as the ATV ride I tried in San Juan, Batangas because the trail at Pan-ay Ayaman Playground is muddy, jagged and twisted, with unexpected ravine-drops. But the gripping ride through serene sights fringed with towering trees was all worth it.

After the thrilling activities, you can rest and relish the tranquil landscape around you, as well as the calming mountain views. Pan-ay Ayaman Playground is bountifully peppered with soaring, fruit-bearing trees like makopa (java apple), plants, and flowers. Giving off a relaxing, back to nature vibe.

Access: It’s about a 15-minute ride from Tan-aw sa Alang (see GPS location above). If coming from Baguio city proper, you can take a taxi or Grab to Pan Ay-Ayaman Playground. Travel time is roughly 38 minutes.

2. UM-A FARM AND RESTAURANT (Tuba, Benguet Tourist Spot)

The largely un-touristy province of Benguet is regarded as the “Salad Bowl Capital of the Philippines”. And concealed in one of its mountains is another tourist attraction in Tuba, Benguet known as Um-a Farm and Restaurant, a farm-to-table restaurant that serves food made from the freshest ingredients grown from their own organic farm. They also source their other products from neighboring farms and local food producers.

Um-a in Ibaloi means “upland farm”. It’s a brainchild of Elmer and Dr. Celestrelle Macalingay who owns the Health 100 Restaurant chain that offers healthy food choices in their mostly-plant-based menu. The restaurant offers a relaxing view of a protected-forest in Tuba, Benguet.

You can even try harvesting vegetables from their farm and have it cooked. We went down to their organic farm and plucked lettuce and tomatoes. The modest and friendly owner – Elmer, even showed us their free-range chickens. It was one of my favorite experiences during the trip.

Overall, Um-a Farm and Restaurant is a highly recommended cafeteria to dine in when you visit Tuba, Benguet. What to order? Here’s our recommendation:

• Ugso or Bagbag (₱250 – $4.26) – banana heart burger patties
• Um-a Greens (₱230 – $3.92) – freshly harvested vegetables (good for 2-3 persons)
• Kardis Baka Langka (₱450 – $7.67) – their version of an Ilonggo dish comprised of kardis (pigeon peas), boiled pork hocks or knuckles, and langka (jackfruit)
• Green smoothies (₱125 – $2.13)

3. BRGY. TADIANGAN STRAWBERRY FARM (Tuba, Benguet)

Most of Tuba, Benguet’s tourist spots are blissfully sheltered by soaring mountains and dense jungles. Take for example the Strawberry Farm at Brgy. Tadiangan along Asin Road. Just a few minutes’ drive from Ben Cab Museum or about 6-minute walk. Unlike the famous, Strawberry farm of La Trinidad, Benguet that is tainted by commercialism and crowd, the restful Brgy. Tadiangan Strawberry Farm cradles pine-fringed hills and vegetables gardens interrupted by cold stream. We were the only visitors here. And although getting here may feel like more of an adventure than you bargained for (as the uncemented foot trail can get slippery during the rainy season), it is worth enduring. It’s just a short uphill hike anyway.

Brgy. Tadiangan Strawberry Farm offers soothing view of the mountains surrounding it. Its sheer isolation, back to nature atmosphere and texture, and the warm locals will beckon you to immortalize its charm in pixels. You can pick and pay strawberries here for ₱500 ($8.52) per kilo, but you must inform them in advance if you are visiting (see contact number below). There are also other vegetables available in the farm, such as zucchini.

We spoke with some of the local women farmers as well as Connie, the daughter of the owner of this small farm business. She happily shared some details about the strawberries grown here. Apparently, like many farms, they practice crop rotation to maintain the fertility of the soil. So, during the first half of the year, they plant strawberries, which thrive in the cold weather. There are two types of strawberries grown at Brgy. Tadiangan Strawberry Farm – the smaller but sweeter Sweet Charlie and the Winter Dawn, which can produce larger fruits. Most of our strawberry farms here in the Philippines grow the local variety of Sweet Charlie. It is sweeter but it has shorter shelf life especially during summer.

Tell the driver to drop you off at Ben Cab Museum. Fare is roughly ₱25 ($0.43) and travel time is roughly 20 minutes. From Ben Cab Museum, walk to the Strawberry Farm for about 6 minutes.

Alternatively, you can just take a taxi or Grab to get there. Fare is about ₱180 ($3.06). Walk to the jumping off point of Brgy.Tadiangan Strawberry Farm for about 6 minutes. From there, it’s a short uphill climb to the Brgy.Tadiangan Strawberry Farm.

4. BEN CAB MUSEUM (Tuba, Benguet)

Over the years, Ben Cab Museum has made its mark as one of the top tourist spots in Benguet. This art museum is owned by National Artist for Visual Arts – Benedicto Reyes Cabrera, a painter and print maker, who is dubbed as a master of contemporary Philippine arts. Despite being born in Manila, Benedicto Cabrera has long been fascinated by Baguio and the Cordilleras, where he chose to live and nurture his artistic career. As per the official website of Bencab Museum, this place is committed to the promotion of the arts, and the preservation, conservation, and protection of the environment and the heritage of the Cordillera Region

Bencab Museum, though usually listed as a Baguio tourist attraction, is actually located in Asin Road in Tuba, Benguet. This contemporary museum houses a collection of his works, and other Filipino contemporary artists. Here, you’ll also find varied indigenous crafts, sculptures, and arts of the Cordilleras.

At the ground floor of the museum, is an artsy café, Café Isabel where you can enjoy some fruit shakes, drinks, and meals after touring Ben Cab Museum. Take note that outside drinks and food aren’t allowed in the museum premises.

But what I like most about Ben Cab Museum is the beautifully-manicured garden at the back that offers a view of the pine-fringed and jungle-clad mountains. We enjoyed taking photos here for Instagram because the scenic garden cradles a man-made mini lake that is home to koi and ducks.

5. IFUGAO’S WOODCARVER VILLAGE (Tuba, Benguet)

Long before there was Bencab Museum on Asin Road, sculpture lovers and tourists already flock to the Ifugao Woodcarver’s Village. As per anecdotes, the history of Ifugao woodcarving originated in the village of Hapao in Hungduan. But after the World War II, due to the increasing demands of foreign tourists to take home local handicrafts, five migrants from Hungduan and Banaue migrated in Asin Road and brought some Ifugao woodcarvers where this famed village was born.

I finally got to visit the Ifugao Wood Carver’s Village on my recent trip to Tuba, Benguet. Here, you can buy high quality Ifugao sculptures, wood craft, Baguio and Benguet souvenirs, and other local handcrafted products. The woodcarver’s can also made to order goods.

Interestingly, they also celebrate the Pa-ot Festival to celebrate the Ifugao woodcarvers’ skills in creating, as well as honor the old Asin Munpa-ot (carvers). The residents here dance the streets during the festivity wearing their crafts, like spears, shields, and carved fertility statues.

6. TAN-AW SA ALANG (Tuba, Benguet)

This is one of my favorite Tuba, Benguet tourist spots, where I enjoyed my breakfast with a scenic view while sipping hot tablea tsokolate. It’s a rustic cafe called Tan-aw sa Alang, blissfully located along Ben Palispis Highway (formerly Marcos Highway) near Badiwan Viaduct. This cozy café offers a neck-swiveling view of the surroundings mountains, as well as Badiwan Valley.

The café name means “overlooking rice granary”. Tan-aw in Cordillera means “overlooking”, while Alang means “rice granary” because Tan-aw sa Alang is actually designed like the rice granaries found in the Cordillera region.

Do try their Arabica coffee served with rice crispies and balikutsa (also spelled as balicucha or balikucha), a traditional pulled candy sugar made from sugarcane juice or palm sugar. Tan-aw sa Alang’s Arabica coffee is served in 3 sizes; bassit (small), dakkel (large), and dakdakkel (larger). My companions ordered the Arabica coffee while I tried their hot tsokolate with balikutsa. Their hot chocolate, made of rich tablea tsokolate, made from ground, roasted coconut beans dissolved in milk and water is really good, with deep, earthy chocolate flavor. You need to put the balikutsa on the hot chocolate and melt it to sweeten it.

Tan-aw sa Alang Coffee shop in Tuba, Benguet menu also includes rice meals and pasta, perfect for breakfast. What to order in Tan-aw sa Alang? Here’s our recommendation:

7. OYSTER MUSHROOM SAN-AGI FARM (Tuba, Benguet)

Another interesting Tuba Benguet tourist spot is the Oyster Mushroom San-Agi Farm owned by the Bitso Family who are mushroom growers and sellers. We met Ate Sharon Bitso and his husband on our recent trip to this Agri-tourism farm. The business is actually a brainchild of their son Shawnie Dhale B. Bitso who was inspired by Learning Sites for Agriculture (LSA) farms.

We visited their mushroom farm, which is housed in Begis, it’s a few minutes’ walk from Tan-aw sa Alang Café. The mushrooms grown here are mostly oyster mushrooms, mainly white, brown, yellow, pink, black, gray, and king varieties. They also grow S10 shiitake mushrooms. The Oyster Mushroom Sanagi farm is open to visitors who want to learn about mushroom propagation.

What I like about their oyster mushrooms is, they grow it organically, avoiding pesticides. It only takes about one and a half month to grow mushroom and once the growing bags mature, they can produce mushrooms for 6 months. Oyster Mushroom San-agi Farm can harvest about 350 kilos of mushrooms per cycle from 1,000 pieces of mushroom growing kits. You can purchase mushroom fruiting bag here for about (₱75 – $1.28), and you can also purchase mushroom chips in different flavors as well as mushroom breadsticks..

Ate Sharon Bitso also showed us their mini-green house where they grow vegetables. She mentioned that they also have rabbits (New Zeeland, Palomino, and Californian breeds) that are grown for their meat. 8. ROSE FARM IN BEGIS, BRGY. POBLACION (Tuba, Benguet Tourist Spot)

Surprisingly, despite its scenic topography, Tuba, Benguet is out-of-the radar of most tourists. And while Benguet province is known for its breathtaking flower farms like Northern Flower Blossoms in Atok. There are relatively unknown backyard farms growing flowers in town that you can include in your Tuba Benguet tourist spot list for your future trip.

We visited a Rose Farm in Begis, Poblacion Tuba, just a 2-minute walk from Tan-aw sa Alang Café and a few minutes away from San-Agi Oyster Mushroom Farm. You can enjoy a morning of walking in a field of fragrant white roses with a scenic view of the emerald green mountains surrounding. Because flowers grown here are purely white roses, it’s not as imposing as the other colorful flower farms in Benguet. But if you’re already in Tuba, it’s still a pleasant place to check out.

You can also purchase white roses here, which thrive best when exposed to the sun for at least 6 hours. White roses are a symbol of loyalty, purity, and innocence that is why it is often used in weddings and special occasions. 9. FARMER’S DAUGHTER CAFÉ AND PASALUBONG (Tuba, Benguet)

Over the years, Farmer’s Daughter Café has made its name as a restaurant serving authentic Cordilleran cuisine. Its original branch in Baguio near Tam-awan Village was included in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants under Essence of Asia, featuring a collection of restaurants that embodies authenticity, culinary culture, and community focus.

Farmer’s Daughter Café has a branch in Tuba, Benguet. Don’t expect a traditional Igorot House like their original branch because it’s located along Aspiris-Palispis Highway (formerly Marcos Highway), which is crowded with structures. You’ll pass by it on your way to Baguio. Despite looking unadventurous, the place offers a foggy view of the village surrounding it.

Here’s what we ordered. I loved their pinuneg, highly recommended. It tastes like a rich dinuguan in sausage form.

10. PINEWOODS GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB (Tuba, Benguet)

If you’re into golf, you can check out Pinewoods Golf and Country Club, situated along Sta. Lucia Road in Brgy. Asin where Baguio and Tuba, Benguet congregate. This 220-hectare master planned community has an 18-hole golf-course designed by Gary Player. We had a quick visit here and was able to enjoy its scenic ambience. If you’re not going to play golf, you can dine or have drinks at their Golfer Bar and Restaurant that is open to visitors.

11. MONCELLO CREST by DMCI Homes Leisure Property (Tuba, Benguet)

Our trip to Tuba, Benguet was made possible by Moncello Crest, a DMCI Homes Leisure Property that is soon to rise in this town. Moncello Crest is an eco-agri mountain resort and condotel in Brgy. Poblacion located near the major tourist spots in Tuba, Benguet. It’s about a 15–20-minute drive from downtown Baguio, offering its future residents and investors the cool highland atmosphere.

Moncello Crest promised to preserve the natural beauty of the area, so the design and engineering of the property was adjusted to include the Benguet pine trees in the development plan. Out of the 4-hectare property, they only plan to build the mountain resort on 25% of the land in harmony with the mountainside terrain, preserving the rest of the land (75%) as open green spaces.

The site of Moncello Crest also has a scenic view of the Benguet sunset and the cloud-piercing ridges surrounding it, as well as a panoramic view of Lingayen Gulf. So, if you’re interested in buying a property for investment, you might want to consider Moncello Crest in Tuba, Benguet.

HOW TO GET TO TUBA, BENGUET

Ride a Baguio-bound bus like Victory Liner, Genesis, or Solid North. Tell the driver you are getting off at Tuba, Benguet (the town before reaching Baguio).

Since Moncello Crest is still under construction, we stayed at Bristle Ridge, another DMCI Homes Leisure Property strategically located near the major tourist spots in Baguio. It’s a 3-building medium rise condominium community in Baguio City with a country-club inspired design.

I stayed in a studio room, which was surprisingly spacious. It has its own living room, dining area, kitchen, and bathroom. Let me show you the photos so you’ll know what to expect in Moncello Crest. I checked the room rates per night via booking sites and they’re pretty affordable. I’d definitely stay here again when I visit Baguio in the future.
