James Luther Turner and Cal Turner owns Dollar General, a family-owned business, called J.L. Turner and Son in Scottsville, Kentucky, in the year 1939. The company is an American chain of variety stores, headquartered in Tennessee. The company operates 15,000 stores in the United States, as of July 2018. In 1955, the company changed the name to Dollar General Corporation, while in 1968, the company went public on the NYSE.

Dollar General mainly diversified its stores in the provinces of the United States. Dollar General has more than 16,368 stores as of February 28, 2020, in 45 states and counting. Texas, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and Ohio are the states with the most number of Dollar General locations, while Wyoming, Washington, Utah, Rhode Island, and Nevada with the least number of Dollar General locations.

The year 2014

Dollar General opened 657 net new stores during the year with 43 store closings. Among the 44 states, Texas is filled with maximum new stores and tolling the store count to 1.25K. Following the streak, the store count in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Ohio, and the company’s foundation place – Tennessee, increased to more than 600, and the company is planning to open more stores in remote and rural locations. Rhode Island, Oregon, South Dakota, New Hampshire, Utah, and Massachusetts either failed to get any store or the least number of stores during the year.

The year 2015

With a slight increase in the net new store count, the figure grows to 697 stores across the U.S., with only 36 store closings. Again, Texas topped the list with 1.30K total stores, increased by 4% YoY. Following the streak, Florida & Georgia consistently grew, whereas Ohio, North Carolina, and Tennessee marked the same figure of 660 stores at the end of the year. Pennsylvania, another prominent location, is steeply growing, marking the total store count of 556 and expected to grow further in the subsequent years. With a slight increase, deserted places like South Dakota and New Hampshire started to thrive at a slower pace.

The year 2016

With a significant increase in the net new store count, the figure grows to 837 stores across the U.S., with 63 store closings. Once again, Texas topped the list with 1.35K total stores, grew slightly by 3.85% YoY. Following the streak, Florida consistently grew while Georgia started increasing higher. In contrast, North Carolina crossed the league of Ohio and Tennessee and marked the figure of 730 stores at the end of the year.
