Directions

You don't need to be a professional baker to have success with these cookie bars, but here are a few steps you'll want to be sure to follow to ensure they turn out perfectly.

STEP 1- CREAM BUTTER & SUGARS

Cream the softened butter and sugars for a few minutes until you get a mixture that looks like this. Make sure it's light and fluffy.

STEP 2- ADD DRY INGREDIENTS

Then add in the flour and dry ingredients and give it a good mix. Your dough should now look like this:

Hint: I never sift the flour and dry ingredients together first because that's just one extra bowl to clean. However, just make sure that you add the flour first, and then add the other dry ingredients onto the pile of flour. Stir quickly with a dry spoon to "sift" and then mix all together.

STEP 3- STIR IN CHOCOLATE CHIPS

Stir in the chocolate chips. There is no need to measure the amount of chocolate chips out. Just pour straight form the bag until you've added enough to your liking. I usually use about 2 cups.

This dough only takes about 5-7 minutes to make! Super fast and easy!

STEP 4- PLACE DOUGH IN PAN

With the dough all made, you're ready to bake! Spray your 9x13 pan pan with your favorite cooking spray. I use Vegalene cooking spray because it has less junk in it than typical spray. And the big can lasts forever.

Firmly press your dough into the pan so that the dough is evenly distributed. Sprinkle a few more chocolate chips on top for good measure!

Bake at 350 degrees F for 20-25 minutes. *See the FAQ for more details about this temperature and time!

I prefer the firm, crisp edges that my 9x13 pan give these cookie bars.

My dough is dry and crumbly. What do I do?

FAQs

Is milk or dark chocolate better for cookies? ›

For Choi-Rodriguez, baking with chocolate chips comes down to the balance between bitter and sweet. "At home, I like to use anything that's at least 66 percent and higher. Since the dough itself is sweet, darker chocolate balances it out beautifully," she says.

Is it better to use semi sweet or milk chocolate chips for cookies? ›

If you're after a sweeter flavor, opt for milk or white chocolate, but if you want to break down the already sweet cookie dough, go for semisweet or dark chocolate.

Is 20 minutes too long for cookies? ›

Unless using a unique recipe, cookies shouldn't take more than 20 minutes and the reason why you might not think that they're done is because of how they look while in the oven. If you put a toothpick in a cookie and it doesn't come out wet, it's ready to take out whether or not it looks ready.

What is the best flour for cookies? ›

All-Purpose Flour: The Versatile Choice

If you're looking for a safe bet or are new to cookie baking, all-purpose flour is your go-to option.

Is light or dark sugar better for cookies? ›

It depends on the cookies. Some cookies are white and have a light, refined taste. For those you want white sugar. Some cookies are darker and have a richer, more complex taste, so you use brown sugar or even add molasses.

Should I use parchment paper when baking cookies? ›

Using parchment paper for baking cookies will enable them to bake more evenly, and the non-stick quality will also help prevent them from cracking or breaking when lifting them off the sheet.

What makes chocolate chip cookies taste so good? ›

In the center, it's softer. The chocolate gives us a melty, dense mouthfeel. The caramelized butter, sugar, vanilla, chocolate, and subtle notes of salt offer a balanced flavor profile. The saltiness highlights and enhances the preexisting flavors.

What chocolate bar is best for cookies? ›

Semisweet and bittersweet

Luckily, the delightfully balanced effect of either semisweet or bittersweet chocolate on a baked good is about the same. The 60 to 70% range is (no pun intended) the sweet spot for most recipes and most personal tastes as it provides some of the astringency of dark without going whole hog.

Is it better to use butter or margarine in chocolate chip cookies? ›

Butter's high fat content is also what gives baked goods their texture. Margarine, which can contain more water and less fat, may make thin cookies that spread out while baking (and may burn). Butter is also the better choice for frying.

Should you refrigerate chocolate chip cookie dough before baking? ›

For starters, chilling prevents cookies from spreading out too quickly once they're in the oven. If you use a higher fat butter (like Kerrygold), chilling your dough is absolutely essential. Popping your dough in the fridge allows the fats to cool.

Is it best to chill cookie dough before baking? ›

Since most cookies are made with softened butter, which is then creamed with the sugar to act as the foundation, it's best to chill the dough after mixing to allow that butter to cool off. “Cookies made from chilled dough expand more slowly as they bake,” Hill says.

Which chocolate is best for cookies? ›

“While milk, semisweet and dark chocolate will all make delicious cookies, semisweet is preferred because it provides a good contrast and balance with the sweetness of the cookies,” said baker Annalise Sandberg of Completely Delicious. Semisweet chocolate generally has a cocoa solid content between 35% and 65%.

Can I use milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate in cookies? ›

You can replace some of the dark chocolate with the equivalent amount of milk chocolate if you like. It won't make it less rich but it will reduce the intensity of the flavour and colour.

Should you use milk chocolate for cookies? ›

Depends on what you're going for I suppose; I much prefer a 50–60% cacao (darker) chocolate in my cookies, but if you want really super sweet cookies, then milk chocolate can work. Neither semi sweet or milk chocolate is better, it just depends on what kind of chocolate you like better.
